AI tools are asking for your confirmation less and less, and acting on their own more and more. What is agentic AI, why is this a tipping point, and what questions should your organisation already be answering about responsibility and control?

Until recently, every AI tool asked for your approval at every action. You typed a command, the tool suggested something, you clicked OK. That model is changing fast. Anthropic this week released auto mode for Claude Code, where the AI executes multi-step development tasks autonomously without pausing at every step. It is a signal that agentic AI — AI that acts and decides independently — is moving from laboratory concept to everyday practice.

What makes AI 'agentic'?

A regular AI chatbot responds to your question and then waits. An AI agent takes a goal, breaks it into steps, executes those steps and corrects itself when something goes wrong. The agent uses tools: it can read and write files, run code, call external services, send emails or fill in forms — all without you needing to intervene.

The difference lies in autonomy. Where a chatbot is an assistant waiting for your next question, an agent is a team member who takes a task off your plate and comes back when it is done — or when it encounters a problem it cannot solve on its own.

Concrete applications for businesses

Agentic AI is not only relevant for software developers. Think of an agent that syncs your CRM with your accounting software every night and reports discrepancies. Or an agent that reads incoming quote requests, looks up the right product information and drafts a quote you only need to approve. Or an agent that monitors your customer service inbox, answers frequently asked questions and escalates complex issues to the right colleague.

What are the risks and how do you manage them?

More autonomy also means more responsibility. If an AI agent makes a mistake — sends the wrong email or overwrites a file — who is responsible? The practical answers are already available: ensure agents work with minimal permissions, build in audit logs so every action is traceable, set limits on what an agent can do without human confirmation, and test new agents in a sandbox before exposing them to production data.

The tipping point is now

The shift to agentic AI is moving quickly. Businesses that are already thinking about governance, permission structures and test protocols for AI agents will be better prepared than those who wait until something goes wrong. The technology is mature enough to take seriously and early enough to set up properly.
